Tattoo Ideas For Men – Choosing One That Suits You

News, Products, Stories, Tattoo Tips 0 Comment »

Making a choice on a tattoo can be a difficult choice and one that should be carefully considered.  In advance of getting tattooed it is important that you think about what kind of design you want.  Tattoos are offered in a number of designs and selecting the best one really depends on what you like.  The following information will summarize tattoo ideas for men and the numerous types which are readily available.

Old School/Traditional Designs

Traditional tattoos began in the west. They feature bold outlines and are frequently rich in blues, reds, and yellows.  Designs like roses, anchors, pin-ups, daggers, fish, eagles, nautical stars, swallows, and hearts feature to a great extent in this style.  Traditional tattoo ideas for men may be found by searching online for traditional tattoo styles, or through investigating the works of a few famous traditional artists, such as Sailor Jerry and Herbert Hoffman, for options.

Asian Designs

Asian tattoos generally refer to oriental designs, Japanese styles, and Chinese tattoos.  Japanese style tattoos are particularly popular.  Koi Fish, dragons, samurai, lotus flowers, kanji, tigers, and Buddhas are popular imagery in Japanese tattoos.  Japanese imagery will be great for arms and large back pieces.

Black and Gray Tattoos

Black and gray tattoos are a traditional design. In place of being focused on color, black and gray tattoos focus mostly on shading. They provide a great amount of realism to an image and most of the time their quality will not fade as quickly as it will with their colored counterparts. Black and gray is excellent for portraits, skulls, flowers, landscapes and quite a few other images.

Tribal Designs

Tribal tattoos generally refer to Samoan Polynesian designs, Maori designs, and Celtic designs, however there are numerous other unique versions of tribal designs.  Tribal tattoos are very popular amongst men and commonly include intricate patterns.

Biomechanical Designs

Biomechanical tattoos are actually a surrealist style. Biomechanical styles feature aliens, machinery, and robot-like components usually intertwined with the skin.  This style of tattooing was made popular by H.R. Geiger’s designs in the movie “Alien.”

Portraits/Photorealism

Portrait tattoos can include portraits of family, characters like Frankenstein, famous men and women, and animals.  Black and gray is excellent for portraits.  Photorealism is usually a style of tattooing which centers on the realism of an image, making it very good for portraits.

Tattoo ideas for men can be very easily found through looking at the various styles of tattoos and deciding which one best fits your requirements.  After you begin investigating a specific style of tattoo you will most likely discover more sub-genres within each style.  No matter what your style, always remember that a tattoo will be permanent, so be sure you give some thought to the design carefully.

Traditional Designs

Traditional tattoo designs are often referred to as old school tattoo designs. They are usually very plain, bold and very much graphically-oriented. Traditional designs are using heavy black outlines with minimal color and a lot of black shades. So, they are usually darker in appearance and the color choice is limited to simple colors such as average blue, green, red and yellow. Colors are used in blocks with very few details. The traditional tattoos usually have a two dimensional shape and have no in-depth illusion. Traditional tattoo designs were done since the 1900’s with less equipment and in a fast and cheap way without too much tough graphics. Because mainly soldiers and sailors were getting tattoos done back in the days when tattoos were less popular, many of the old school motives have army and navy motives. The simplicity, traditional American roots and historical significance is the reason why this type of tattoo stayed popular through the years. Nowadays, those artists who practice traditional tattoo designs, in order to have their work considered as truly traditional, have to adhere to some very distinct and specific set of visual rules. The above mentioned rules mainly apply on the visual aspects of the tattoo like the colors and theme of the tattoo. Many traditional artists use work from great old school tattoo artists like Don Ed Hardy and Lyle Tuttle as the basis for their designs. That is why a great number of traditional tattoo designs are being taken directly or interpreted from the sheets of tattoo designs prepared for mass replication, widely known as “flash”.

If you are interested in a true traditional tattoo then you should make sure that you are getting a tattoo which really meets the standards of a traditional tattoo. Make sure to pick a great tattoo artist that is capable of making real traditional tattoos and is familiar with all the rules of traditional tattoos. If you or your tattoo artist acts to reckless you might end up with a false or knock off tattoo. Of course, this might not be important to you at all. One of the latest and newest aspects of traditional tattoo designs is the so-called “neo-traditional” tattoo genre, which has grew in popularity in recent times. The neo-traditional tattoo is made by combining the rules of the traditional tattoos and some modern techniques and tools. This often results in a very impressive and much more diverse hybrid design. Think in example about a tattoo which has those thick black and easy lines but has a great variety of different shades of certain colors. If you like the old traditional tattoos but also don’t want something to old fashioned then this can be the best solution for you.
