You have now been in contact with many needles and your skin is vulnerable. Leave the bandages on for at least 2 to 6 hours. Then gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and non-perfumed soap.
Normally you’ll need to put lotion on your new tattoo approx. 3 times daily for the first two weeks, but do not use any kind of lotion. Regular body lotions should not be used because they interfere with the healing process. Also, be aware that some lotions may bleach your tattoo.
Avoid direct sunlight, so make sure to cover it properly before going outside. Needless to say, you shouldn’t use a tanning bed either. Also wait a couple of weeks before you go swimming. Besides interfering with your skin’s healing process, it can also fade out the colors of your tattoo.
… and oh yeah, your tattoo itching like crazy after about a week is completely normal. Keep applying that lotion!
| Note: This guide is only given as good advise. You still should consult the ARTIST who did your tattoo, he/she will know what’s best for you and probably has his/her own way of dealing with new tattoos. Also ask around in one of the recommended tattoo forums that are mentioned on this site, if you need answers to similar questions. |

I was just searching around about this when I came by your blog post. I’m just stopping by to say that I really liked reading this post, it’s very clear and well written. Are you considering posting more about this? It appears like there is more fodder here for more posts.
