Bacitracin is a popular choice. You can also consider A&D ointment. Be cautious when it comes to Neosporin. Many people have reported that it has created a bad allergic reaction when they used it for this purpose. That can result in tiny red bumps which will take the ink with them when they finally disappear, leaving empty dots where once there was smooth ink.

Q: After removing the initial bandage, how long should I keep a fresh one on? What other lotions should I apply after a few days?

A:No new bandage! You need to let air get to the tattoo, uncovered, once you remove the original one. Gently wash the tattoo at least twice daily for the first week and keep it moist (not soaked) by applying the ointment about 6 times daily.

Keeping it moist will reduce the amount of peeling and reduce scabs and thus reduce color fade.And ALWAYS remember to maintain good hygiene when doing this (CLEAN HANDS!) After 3 or 4 days you should switch from the ointment to a moisturizing lotion.
